Orange Cream Swirl Brownies

Easy and perfect for Halloween!  One of my dad’s favorite things is orange sticks, an orange jelly candy covered with dark chocolate shaped like a stick.  So, I learned at a young age to love these two flavors together.  Here is this orange chocolate flavor combination together in brownie form.  Maybe every flavor combination works in brownie form, something to keep me up at night…

Orange Cream Swirl Brownies

1 pkg (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup sugar
zest of 1 orange
1 tsp orange juice
1 egg
yellow & red food color
1 box (1 lb 2 oz) fudge brownie mix
2/3 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup water
1 egg

Heat oven to 350°.  Line a 9″ square pan with foil (I know, brownie mix says for 13×9, please trust me) and spray with non-stick cooking spray.

In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, orange zest, orange juice and 1 egg with electric mixer.  Add 2 drops each yellow and red food color (more if you want a more intense orange) to make pretty orange color, set aside.

In another medium bowl, combine by hand brownie mix, oil, water and 1 egg until well blended.  Spread half of batter in pan.  Gently pour cream cheese mixture over batter, lightly spread.  Carefully spoon remaining batter on top, spread gently to cover.  Using butter knife, slowly cut through batters to make swirl affect, not too much.

Bake 47 to 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted 1″ from side of pan comes out almost clean. Cool completely, about 1½ hours.  When cool, remove brownies from pan by gently lifting foil, set on cutting board and cut.   Store covered in refrigerator.
