Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownie Bars

This is a fun mix of two favorites, brownies and chocolate chip cookies.  I made my brownie batter with dark cocoa but regular is great for lighter flavor and color.  I loaded the brownie batter with walnuts, but pecans, or macadamia nuts would be good or no nuts if you are not a fan.  I used semisweet chocolate chips in the cookie batter but milk, butterscotch, cinnamon, or white chips would be a taste adventure!

Brownie Batter:
3/4 cup butter, melted
1½ cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
3 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa (regular or dark)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350°.  Spray 13″x9″ baking pan with nonstick spray.  In large bowl, mix by hand butter, sugar, and vanilla.  Beat in eggs.  Stir together flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt, stir into butter mixture.  Stir in walnuts.  Pour into prepared pan.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Batter:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/2 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup chocolate chips

In large bowl with electric mixer, cream butter, sugar, and brown sugar.  Mix in egg and vanilla.  Stir together flour, baking soda, and salt, add to creamed mixture.  Stir in chocolate chips.  Drop by scoopfuls over brownie batter then with a knife, spread out slightly.  Bake 35-40 minutes, cover with foil part way through if getting too brown.  Bake until center is set.  Cool completely before cutting into squares.
